Sachem Central School District students at Merrimac Elementary were treated to a schoolwide pet education assembly led by two of their fellow students – fifth-graders Camdyn Bentivenga and Jaclyn Ianson, each of whom has a passion for animal safety. During the presentation, the students shared that passion and spoke about the nonprofit organization, the Pet Education Project.
“We chose PEP because it was the only organization that helps animals with kids leading the way,” said Camdyn. “I like how we help teach everyone how to become animal heroes!”
PEP promotes a message of responsible pet ownership and spreads awareness of pet abuse. During the presentation, students learned about animal shelter overcrowding and ways that they can make a positive impact on affected animals. The two student presenters developed an interactive way to raise money for the PEP organization. They created a “spin and win wheel” where students donate a dollar to spin for a chance to win a prize such as stuffed animals, bookmarks, PEP pencils and key chains. All prizes were provided by Jaclyn and Camdyn’s parents. To date, the students have raised $476.
“Throughout our work with the organization I’ve learned many valuable lessons – the most important of which was how many pets really need our help,” said Jaclyn. “Having the spin and win wheel will involve everyone in our school in helping to raise funds for this very important cause.”
Following the presentation, Camdyn and Jaclyn held a brief question-and-answer period, also informing the students that Erica Falbaum, the PEP founder, will be visiting on Oct. 20. After the students contacted Falbaum, she was excited to come to Merrimac and share her “PEP talk” with the students.
